ForSite | Increased Biomass Harvesting

Demand for biomass fuel is likely to grow, to replace fossil fuels, for climate-change mitigation. Much woody material in forests is suitable as fuel. Work is under way to develop systems to use this woody fuel.

Increased biomass harvesting will alter forestry practice, and forest ecosystems. Access to the forest for walking may be made easier. There may be impacts on biodiversity, on carbon sequestration, and on nutrient supply for future forest stands.

The ForSite Project is assessing the nutrient impact of increased biomass harvesting in forests.[image should be here]Biomass harvesting being tested. These harvested trees have their branches still on. The needles have been allowed to fall off, to keep nutrients in the forest.
